    About the artist

    ARTIST STATEMENT

Through his art, Javi explores creativity as a medium for storytelling and exploring visual definitions of beauty. He loves the challenge in creating pieces of art that transcend time or experiment with spanning historical eras and art genres.

He paints mainly in oils on hard surfaces, such as board or canvas board, so he can use techniques like scoring, scratching or rubbing to create different surface texture effects.

His quest to deconstruct beauty has him exploring seductive, alluring classical or iconic cultural figures and repurposing them to create contemporary works. He re-imagines them through cropping, magnifying, realigning and re-framing.

“This juxtaposition of classical and contemporary redefines motifs and tropes from art history, re-framing them and lending them a new context and meaning, so they appeal to modern viewers for both the same and for new reasons.”

Born in Morocco, Javi grew up in Gibraltar. He studied Visual Communication Design in London in the late '90s and has successfully been involved, ever since, in the design and technology industry as a Creative Director, building brands and software platforms for blue-chip companies. Today, he lives with his family in the South Cotswolds.
